Operators with category C1 licence can operate smaller trucks than those with other licence types. Any time the HGV weighs more than 3.5 tonnes but less than 7.5 tonnes, this is required. Anyone who passed their driving test prior to 1997 will be granted one of these licences automatically. Anybody who passes after that will have to retake the exam to get it. You then need to finish the mandatory HGV Class 1 Training created by the government in order to earn this kind of licence, which will result in improved outcomes in terms of safe driving features.
